Be Careful in School Zones!

Please be aware of the changes to the Louisiana Law RS:32:300.8, Use of Wireless Telecommunication Devices in School Zones. If you are stopped for using a wireless device (cell phone, two-way radio, etc.) in a school zone during the posted hours, the fine for a first offense has increased from $175 to $500. Subsequent offenses have been increased from $500 to $1000. With each offense you also risk a 60 day driver's license suspension. If you are using the device and cause an accident, the fines are doubled. This includes talking on the device, texting, checking email/social media, etc.

Be aware that the school zone extends into the parking lot areas and the drop-off/pick-up areas. If you are legally parked in a designated parking area, it is okay to use the device. Exceptions to the law included law enforcement and emergency services on the job; if you are reporting an emergency, it is allowed.
